abstract art DIY

I draw and paint. Most of the work I’ve done has been my own sketchy style: portraits, flowers, patterns, some animals, some character illustration for product, etc.

One thing that has been kinda intimidating for me was abstract art. This was because I was not quite sure how to break up the subject matter in a meaningful way. But I think I found something that works for me, AND I think it can work for anyone who wants to dabble in abstract art. I worked on my piece for a couple of hours I think.

Supplies:

acrylic artist paint, paint brushes, container(s) to mix paint and store paint, water cup, canvas

  1. Select your inspiration. Can be anything: photo, flower, your pet, etc.

  2. Using makers, colored pencils, or crayons sketch out loosely color blocking portions of your subject that simplify it until you are happy with the layout.

  3. Layout your sketch on your canvas using pencil, chalk, or marker.

  4. Mix your paint colors in containers that you can seal if need to stop working

  5. Apply paint similar to your color blocked sketch until you are happy with the results.

You’ll have to let me know if you finish a piece. Would love to see it!

Have a great day!
